Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Indian rosewood and Sitka spruce are arguably the quintessential tonewood combination of the modern era. Although rosewood is typically reserved for our higher-end models, our Fall LTD 400 Series brings a rosewood guitar within the range of more budgets. This selection of rosewood sports rich chocolate-and-caramel variegation, made even richer with a gloss finish. To broaden the appeal to every style of player, each is highlighted with crisp white binding. Additional appointments include pearl dot fretboard inlays and a 3-ring rosette. A Venetian cutaway and the Taylor Expression System® pickup are also featured.

Customer Reviews:
5 out of 5 stars Beautiful limited edition, excellent electrics   May 24, 2010
Martin Turner (Marlcliff, Warwickshire, England)
The 414CE is a beautifully made, highly playable guitar with excellent resonance, tone and volume and the same electronics as the much higher priced 814CE and 914.

If you put the 414CE next to the 814CE, you have to have a very good ear to hear the difference. There _is_ a difference, and if you can hear it, you will be hearing it in a slightly more resonant bass. But if you put the 814 back on the shelf and audition the 414 next to premium guitars from other makes, the full 'guitary' tone will draw you back to the 414.

The Fall Limited Edition is a specially good one to get, because it's made with the more expensive Sitka spruce and Indian rosewood usually reserved for the 800 series guitars. Hence the strong similarity in tone between the two guitars.

As you would expect from a guitar at this price, playability is excellent with an action low enough for lead work and fast chord work, but high enough to allow you to really belt out the sound without fear of rattle when you need to. The overall finish is, again as you would expect, excellent, and the blonde spruce looks plain enough to belie the well balanced tone -- until you hear it.

Faced with a room full of Taylors, Martins and Guilds, I really did intend to buy a Guild. The brilliantly low action and big, comfortable sound of a Guild D50 was something I'd played before, and really rather wanted. And then, of course, there were Martins: guitars with a pedigree like no other. The Taylor tone drew me back, though, and then something else.

The jewel in the crown for high end Taylors is the electronics. These guitars have three pickups built in, extracting the resonance under the bridge and in two other places. You can turn them off selectively, usually if you're struggling with feedback, but I've never had to. These are coupled with extremely well balanced bass and treble controls on the guitar, a good volume control and -- wait for it -- a low impedance balanced TRS output, through the jack socket which is also the strap knob at the bottom. If you just plug a normal guitar lead in, it functions as a normal high impedance unbalanced guitar out, and works with all the usual amps. However, as long as you pack a Male XLR to TRS jack lead, you can plug this straight into the PA system or even (if you are incorrigibly lazy) into a recording desk, without needing a DI Box. Of course, you may have some difficulties trying to tell the PA guys that, and you may have to listen while they patiently explain to you that you can't plug a guitar straight into the desk no matter what cable you have, because it has the wrong impedance. Fortunately, Taylor give you a very clear instruction sheet which you can carry in the guitar case and show the PA team.

I've never met a Taylor owner who was disappointed in their guitar. The 414ce limited edition is a superb instrument, up to any playing environment and the most demanding player. The only thing that would make you not want to buy a 414ce is ... the 814. But that's another story.
