Customer Reviews:
5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners   June 27, 2010
A reader (London, GB)

I have been playing the drums for less than a year, completely self-taught, with the help of a few instructional DVDs. This DVD ("Play drums today") has helped me a lot and I would definitely recommend it to total beginners.
The footage is professionally made, using helpful camera angles. I found the "bird's eye" view (i.e. from above) very useful to analyze the positioning of the different drums, and the angles made by the player's arms. A small inset camera always shows the player's footwork, which I also found very helpful.
The first half of the DVD has sections dedicated to the different components of the drum set (the snare drum, the ride cymbal, the tom toms etc), taking you through the basic playing technique using a few short exercises. I liked this approach as I felt I could get accustomed to each drum individually, before starting to play them all together. The exercises start very slowly and easily, building up the complexity smoothly as you move through the sections.
The second half of the video takes you through exercises that combine the different components of the drum set, and introduces you to accents and basic song structures.
The DVD comes with a booklet that has all the exercises shown in the video. I have found the booklet useful, as I can practise the exercises without having to play the video.
This video has achieved my expectations: it's a thorough introduction to drumming for a complete beginner. It does not waste time with footage of performances or with vague descriptions of technique; it teaches you the basics, giving you lots of simple exercises and some good tips.
If you have some regular practice time, I imagine that you will be able to go through this DVD pretty quickly.
After this, or along with it, I recommend "Unburying the beater" (by Matt Ritter) for bass drum technique and "Secret weapons for the modern drummer" by Jojo Mayer - superb on hand technique.
