| Customer Reviews: Sony Movie Studio 10 August 6, 2010 DaveP 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
It does what it says on the tin. This is a fast and powerful video editor which is great for SD and HD work, and doesn't cost an arm or a leg. Download the trial first from Sony and see for yourself. The trial version is fully functional for one month so a good opportunity to really try it out on a full scale editing project. It would score full marks if there wasn't some occasional instability using it with Vista and large HD files on my computer.

At around £50 this is excellent value. Its design being based on a 10 track multi-track VST-capable audio package with added video tracks, it is especially useful for the musician who might want to hook up a Behringer 1002FX and combine a song composition with movie footage. The package is intuitive to use, the drop-down menus being crammed with goodies that all make sense. The help system is good with a complete glossary and helpful advice. The track structure is logical, with the ability to add several tracks and place footage on each to aid composite editing.
Processes like video capture from tape do not in general like interruptions, such as may occur when the space on a disc is fragmented and the record head on the disc has to jump from gap to gap, so as memory is cheap and life is short, I use the package with a separate hard drive with a generous cache, and capture from DV tape is a breeze with zero dropped frames.
There is a good choice of output formats, especially quicktime, and rendering is fast, aided on my PC by a 4 core processor and plenty of RAM.
Although there is a facility to render to a blue-ray disc image I have not found one for a DVD image, so one either has to render to an intermediate .avi file which would be very large (and subsequently deleted leaving a disc space fragment) or rendering is done as the disc is writing which could be a problem on slower machines.
The only serious negative I have found is the so-called chroma-key. Rather than provide a discrete switch at the transition between green (or blue) and the foreground subject it modifies the transparency of the green (or blue) screen together with the wanted foreground subject. As a result it is difficult to stop the required background from being seen through the wanted foreground, and this may require some subtle lighting changes to improve. On the plus side this is supported by a good animation function enabling the foreground to be expanded or shrunk and moved around the background. As I have no experience of other packages I can not provide a comparison.
Of smaller concern, the image in the preview window partially collapses, but this does not effect the end result.
Overall, very good value even if it was purchased simply as an audio multitracker.
